Columbiyum's first restaurant review is finally here! As a food review, we've made it our goal to support multicultural businesses by extending student's meal options past the Upper West Side. Sharing a meal teaches us about the culture that created the food, and we want to connect Columbia's campus to these experiences.
Our first review had to go to @zhego_nyc_, a Bhutanese restaurant near Jackson Heights, Queens that recently opened last month. π§πΉAdorned with the Bhutanese flag, a tribute to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and music playing, Zhego proudly brings all customers to interact with Bhutanese culture. Coming inside from the cold, we had to start with their Suja, or butter tea, a rich and savory drink that fits the cozy environment. Next we had to try their cheese momo, handmade using locally-produced cheese (for just $8)! Then we split the Shamu Datsi, a stew of oyster mushrooms, onion, tomato, and green chili, with cheese melted on top. We ended with the Shakam Datsi, made with Bhutanese dried beef (Shakam β similar but not as dry as jerky), white chilis, and, of course, cheese (Datsi) melted on top.
Before leaving, we were treated to some Khapse made for Losar (New Year - 2/21)! They were sweet biscuits made with twisted dough, and it was an honor to get a sneak peek at the celebrations to come. We'll be back to try the famous Ema Datsi and Goep Paa soon.
Outstanding food and very reasonable prices ($14 per person), an amazing place to try when you aren't feeling dining hall food or need to escape the bubble! Help support local businesses while getting to learn about the cultures that shape NYC by giving Zhego a visit!
Directions: Take the 1 to Times Square, then transfer to the Flushing-Main St bound 7. Exit at 61 St - Woodside and walk down 61st St towards 39th Ave and Zhego will be on your left, between 39th and 38th! Enjoy!
